Despite the name “Silk Road”, much of the ancient trade network did not consist of roads; rather, the Silk Road was a common route that was followed by travelers and merchants. In some cases, travelers would use bone markers like the one seen below as a visual guide.
The Silk Road itself was pioneered sometime during the mid-first millennium BCE and not established as a regular trade route until near the end of that millennium. The history of the Silk Road properly begins with the prior history of long-distance travel, trade, and population movements across the trans-Eurasian steppe belt.
During the Silk Road era, dhows made it as far as China and Indonesia. They traded linen, cotton, woolen clothes, metalwork and iron ore from the Middle East for silks, camphor, musk and spices from Asia. Today, dhows are often used to transport tourists or to ferry people over short distances.

The significance of the Silk Road to the time period around 1949 was immense. They relied on this mode of trade to get the goods they needed, and also get their messages across to the others they encountered. This was definitely an important part of history, and an interesting topic to blog about.
